Today our Broadcast is inspired by Anna Lembke's book, Dopamine Nation. In today's episode we’re exploring something that shows up in every nervous system — friction. Specifically, the friction that occurs when dopamine is involved. We live in a world filled with easy hits of pleasure: notifications, food, shopping, binge-watching, social media, and even our thoughts. Anna Lembke describes dopamine as the molecule that drives desire. It’s not just about feeling good — it’s about wanting more. When we chase pleasure, we temporarily tip the seesaw of the brain toward reward. But here’s the part we don’t usually talk about: the brain wants to regain balance. And to do that, it introduces friction — a little discomfort, restlessness, irritation, or craving — to bring us back to center. This is where mindfulness becomes a powerful tool. Instead of fighting the friction or scrambling to eliminate the discomfort, we learn to be present with it. And when we do, something shifts: the craving loses power. Today’s practice is about practicing for the friction so that when it inevitably comes, we are ready to respond in a way that aligns with our values. Let’s practice together.
