Understanding the Confusion Pakhtoon, Pathan, and Afghan: A Cultural and Historical Comparison Pakhtoon, Pathan, Khan, Pashtoon, and Afghan: What's the Difference? The terms Pakhtoon, Pathan, Khan, Pashtoon, and Afghan are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct historical, linguistic, and cultural meanings: Pakhtoon/Pashtoon: These are the native terms for the ethnic group that speaks Pashto and follows Pashtunwali (a traditional code of conduct). "Pakhtoon" is commonly used in the western dialect of Pashto, while "Pashtoon" is used in the eastern dialect. Pathan: This is the term used by British colonizers and is still commonly used in South Asia, especially in Pakistan and India, to refer to Pashtuns. Khan: A title of respect often associated with Pashtun leaders or elders. However, "Khan" is also used by other ethnic groups in South Asia and is not exclusive to Pashtuns. Afghan: Historically, "Afghan" referred to Pashtuns. However, in modern times, it refers to all citizens of Afghanistan, regardless of ethnicity (including Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, etc.). In short, all Pakhtoons/Pashtoons are Afghans (historically), but not all Afghans are Pakhtoons. "Pathan" is a colonial term, and "Khan" is a title, not an ethnicity.
