This video goes over the history of the Libyan Dinar. Libya is a North African country that has gone through many twists and turns but, they are still very rich in history and culture. The history of modern Libya begins in 1959 after the discovery of large oil reserves in the country. This resource brought wealth to the country as well as mass corruption. Many Libyans were disgruntled because the newfound wealth only benefited a very small group of people at the top. On September 1st, 1969 Muammar al-Gaddafi staged a coupe against former King Idris and then began his rule. Soon afterwards the Central Bank started issuing Libyan Dinar banknotes. There are 8 series of Dinar banknotes released so far. They feature images of landscapes, mosques and prominent figures. The first banknote featuring Gaddafi was from the 4th generation of banknotes which were released in 1988. In 2008 the last banknotes featuring Gaddafi were released. After the Libyan revolution new banknotes began to circulate. East and West Libya eventually started printing their own banknotes due to banknote shortages.
