In the early hours of 25 January 1986, Rupert Murdoch’s covert move from Fleet Street to new premises in Wapping would kick off the second largest industrial dispute and trade union defeat in British history; the Wapping Dispute. From the shop floor, Murdoch would hold his ground and dismiss questions on the roughly 5000 workers dismissed by News International Group, as the picket lines chafed wearily against the new perimeters of the Wapping facility.
