Located on the slopes of Erusheti, towering above the green valley carved by the Mtkvari River, Vardzia is Georgia's most remarkable cave city. In its prime, this rock-hewn city consisted of 6,000 rooms spread across 19 levels, including 25 wine cellars, a monastery, 15 chapels, and a pharmacy—creating a vibrant medieval city and monastic community. Originally conceived and built as a fortress in the 12th century under King George III, it was truly brought to life by his daughter, Queen Tamar. Under her close supervision, a complex system of caves and halls was carved deep into Erusheti, including a secret escape tunnel and a maze of dead-end corridors designed to confuse enemies. Vardzia remains one of the most popular tourist attractions for travelers. Exploring the depths of Vardzia presents a captivating journey through this ancient cave city.
