What 97 Days At Sea Taught Me About Coming Home tells the remarkable story of a 21 year old who rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean, travelling over four thousand miles from Portugal to French Guiana in 97 days and setting three world records along the way. But this talk is not just about endurance at sea. It is about what happened after. From storms, capsizes and total isolation to the mental resilience built through self kindness and realistic goal setting, the ocean became a place of clarity and purpose. Returning home, however, proved to be the unexpected challenge. Back at university and adjusting to ordinary life, the loss of structure, identity and momentum brought frustration, self doubt and a difficult emotional slump. This honest reflection explores the rarely discussed aftermath of achieving a major goal, the struggle of coming down from something extraordinary, and the patience required to rebuild. At its heart, this is a powerful message about self compassion, identity beyond achievement, and recognising that sometimes the hardest journey is not the one that takes you across an ocean, but the one that brings you home. Zara Lachlan is a competitive cyclist and record-breaking rower who has recently acquired her degree as a Physics graduate from Loughborough University. She has managed to break records as the first female and youngest rower to traverse across 3,600 nautical miles, from the shores of Portugal to the South of Rémiré, French Guiana. After being featured on the BBC Breakfast, Inspiring Women Leaders podcast and Her Sport UK, she reflects on her journey through it all in her latest speech, learning how to overcome her own challenges and make strides in her life alongside everyone else around her. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
