(27 Jul 1961) Thorn in the flesh of President Bourguiba of Tunisia is the French Naval Base at Bizerta. His attempt to deprive the French of their rights to hold and defend it, produced immediate retaliation, and 3 days of fearful bloodshed. Movietone cameramen took these pictures as French troops established command of the situation, clearing streets and buildings of the last remnants of opposition. Inevitably, innocent people were to suffer. The Tunisians paid a high price for their attempt to anticipate an answer to their demands, and mass funerals pointed with tragic clarity the full extent of a bloody sacrifice, nearly 700 dead, over 1,100 were wounded.
