The Bhagavad Gita is, perhaps, one of the most important texts of the yoga tradition; commented on by every Indian philosophical tradition that comes after it, weaving a tapestry of topics, ideas, and teachings that build on what came before it, while providing foundation for much that comes after it, and pouring its wisdom into modern, western yoga, this text is rich in possibilities of interpretation and exploration. The text can be viewed from many angles and thought of in many ways. In this session we explore the space where the text takes place - the midline - the space between two armies. The midline - Madhya in Sanskrit - is where we get to pause and consider, contemplate, and process. The majority of the yoga tradition thinks of it as a state of merging with the universe. We’ll play with the midline within us, and between us and the world, and bring the weaving together of both into a physical practice that creates space to listen to life and receive its complexity as nourishment. We’ll move slowly, breathe consciously, and play with a few standing poses, gently open up the hips, and focus on the inner and the outer, listen within and around, and finish with a short meditation on the Madhya.
