Hymn to the Sun: Mesomedes of Crete. Bettina Joy de Guzman Music: performance and musical composition with replica Ancient Greek lutes, bell, tamborello, aulos, frame drum, and voices by Bettina Joy de Guzman. This is an interpretation of the melody and Ancient Greek lyrics by Mesomedes of Crete, 2nd c AD. The melody of the Ancient Greek musical notation is transliterated and (when notes are missing) supplemented by Pöhlmann and West, Documents of Ancient Greek Music. Ancient Greek Lutes by: @SEIKILO , Luthieros, Koumartzis family. About Mesomedes: Mesomedes of Crete sang his compositions while playing the lyre. He was a great success in his lifetime, & a close friend of Emperor Hadrian. 4 of his poems have musical notation, & were likely used to teach music in later antiquity and Byzantium. 14 poems attributed to Mesomedes are valuable records of poetry sung to the lyre or to the cithara by some of the most highly rewarded musicians in the high Roman empire - metrically simple, but not always simple in thought or expression. He will be the subject of the third Donald Russell Memorial lecture by Professor Ewen Bowie on 23 October. Songs by Bettina Joy de Guzman will be included in Professor Bowie’s lecture. Bettina Joy de Guzman will perform songs of Mesomedes at the Ure Museum, University of Reading campus, on November 20th, 5 pm. She will also hold a workshop which includes performance of Mesomedes songs on November 24, 5 pm, at Oxford University, Kendrew Barn.
