About the talk: In Late Antiquity, apocalyptic themes, as found, for example, in the Book of Revelation, were interpreted in new ways. We find an internalization of such motifs: Focus was shifted from the general judgment at the end of the world to the individual judgment at death. This was an apocalypticism characterized by concerns for moral reform and individual responsibility, but also for the responsibility of the church and its teachers. The present paper discusses how these developments are mirrored in the writings of Jerome of Stridon (d. 419) and particularly in his ideas about pastoral responsibility in relation to judgment. About the presenter: Katarina Pålsson is a researcher in Church History at the Centre for Theology and Religious Studies, Lund University. In 2019, she defended her doctoral thesis on the reception of Origen of Alexandria in Jerome’s eschatological thought. Since then, her research has involved the early Latin monastic movement as well as late antique eschatology. She is currently working within the research program “At the End of the World: A Transdisciplinary Approach to the Apocalyptic Imaginary in the Past and Present”, based at Lund University. In this program, she studies the reception of apocalyptic motifs in late antique and early medieval Christianity.
