Hello! Thank you for stopping by for part 4 and finale of our mini series! We visit the old foundation of the stamp mill in Hedley, two historic cemeteries and find our way to the abandoned upper tram station cabin. We will never be able to do this area the justice it deserves when telling its tale, this is simply a tiny piece of an amazing story that is, was and will always be Hedley BC. A huge thank you to the patient and knowledgeable people at the Hedley museum and for all those who shared their tales of this amazing piece of history. We are currently speaking with the Hedley Cemetery, hoping to find out where Archie and Billie are buried, as their names did not show up on the most recent burial list for the Hedley Cemetery. Thank you for watching and stay safe out there!! 1898, the gold rush begins in the Similkameen Valley, where hundreds of men and women came in search of fortunes, or a wage paying job and a touch of luck. Today the community continues with generational lineages that spanned not only the past hundred years, but those families whose earliest ancestors came to the Similkameen thousands of years before, the Upper Similkameen people. To grasp the tenacious character of those who built Hedley, one only needs to look thousands of feet above the town where Nickle Plate Mountain meets the ski, where wooden structures cling preciously to the mountain strata, a place where hard luck was won and lost at the Hedley Mascot Mine, and below in Hedley City where the dreams of riches and gold where matched by the reality of life in a geographically remote local and on lands that have been reputedly been cursed by a Similkameen medicine man. Community memories, including written history, shared stories, and photographic evidence, paint the inhabitants of Hedley as imaginative, tenacious and as tough as the mountain they were determined to triumph over in order to secure their riches. -Canadian Museum Of History/Hedley Heritage Museum.
