Protect What is Yours… Shadow brought his take-out breakfish to the nest again early yesterday morning and was able to eat the entire meal without anyone bothering him. While he was busy cleaning his beak, Jackie joined him. They did some housekeeping and Jackie laid down briefly. Then while Shadow stayed home, she headed out and returned with a fresh bundle of straw. They bumped into each other as they spread it out before both flew off. Jackie returned to the nest late morning with a headless fish but she was not as lucky as Shadow to enjoy her meal in peace. Just as she started to dig in, she was on alert and began to call loudly. A large sub-adult bald eagle, possibly a 2024 hatch and likely hungry, chased her in and it landed on the attic branch above her. Perhaps Jackie stole its meal and the youngster was just chasing after its own fish. Stealing food in the eagle world is common and depending on their age, the sub-adult has not yet perfected their hunting skills. But since we don't know for sure, this visitor was now above Jackie in a more dominant position. Jackie, however, being much more experienced and on her home turf, still had the advantage. Jackie also may have been more tolerant of the visitor since no eggs or chicks were in the nest. Her warning calls were likely directed at the youngster, rather than Shadow for help, perhaps to teach it a lesson to mantle and hold tight to its food or it could be stolen. Jackie finished off the fish while the young bird above her twisted its flexible neck around and watched intently. It was calm and made no attempts to come down or to threaten Jackie. After she was done, Jackie moved to the front porch and attempted a wing slap but the bird got the message that there would be no leftovers and it flew off. Before it left the area, it soared around a few times in front of Jackie as she perched on the front porch. Jackie ended the day back in the nest at sunset with a couple of quick pancakes to test the bowl before flying off to roost. A winter storm is on the way in the next few days. Stay safe Jackie and Shadow!
