MAP FORUM - 4 January 2022 Imagining the Pox in Renaissance Italy This paper is part of an on-going book project on how the Great Pox was perceived and experienced in Renaissance Italy by the juxtaposition and comparison of written and visual sources through the prism of contemporary medical theory. While attention will be paid to the evidence of satirical plays and autobiographical accounts, the main emphasis here will be on the visual depiction of the Pox. Evidence will be drawn from a variety of sources from broadsheets to images of Job, the patron saint of this epidemic disease, to medical illustrations, bringing us to a closer understanding of the impact of this new disease on Renaissance Italy. John Henderson is Professor of Italian Renaissance History, Birkbeck, University of London, and Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. His most recent books include: Florence Under Siege: Surviving Plague in an Early Modern City (2019; Italian translation: Firenze e la peste (Rome, 2021); Plague and the City, edited with Lukas Engelmann and Christos Lynteris (2019); and Representing Infirmity. Diseased Bodies in Renaissance Italy, edited with Fredrika Jacobs and Jonathan Nelson (2021).
