Hannah Gardner is a Sophomore Microbiology major in the Randall Research Scholars Program (RRSP). Their research project presentation, "The Implementation of Research PACS for Enhanced Medical Image Archival," was completed under the advisement of Dr. Sharlene Newman from the UA MRI Research Facility at Alabama Life Research Institute Department. Project Description: This research project initially aimed to implement XNAT, a comprehensive platform for managing and archiving medical images within UA's MRI Research Facility. However, due to the extended timeline required for installation necessitating the configuration of Apache Tomcat, PostgreSQL, and adjustments to the firewall the project has pivoted to optimizing the integration of Orthanc with the MRI scanner. The current focus is on enhancing the DICOM system by improving categorization methods for medical images and refining imaging clarity. These improvements aim to streamline image storage and retrieval processes while ensuring higher quality imaging data for advanced research and diagnostic purposes.
