(26 Jan 1973) RR7304B ICELAND'S LARGEST VOLCANO On January 23rd 1973, the volcano of Helgafell on the island of Heimaey, off the southern coast of Iceland, erupted violently, sending flames and red-hot rocks shooting 300 feet into the air. Immediately threatened were the 5,500 inhabitants of Vestmannaeyjar, the island's only town, third largest town in Iceland and capital of the nation's fishing industry. There was an immediate evacuation, the island's fishing industry is now threatened and Iceland's premier has described the eruption as the worst tragedy in the nation's 1,100 year history. In 1965, the people of Vestmannaeyjar watched, fascinated as the island of Surtsey rose up from the sea only ten miles away; now they themselves are faced with the prospect of seeing their island disappear.
