Sierra backpacking: Taboose Pass from the Taboose Pass Trailhead, Cardinal Mountain, Taboose pass trail to the JMT/PCT trail junction. Eastern Sierra - Taboose Pass from the Taboose Pass Trailhead, hike up Cardinal Mountain, Taboose Pass Trail from Taboose Pass to the JMT/PCT Trail and the Muro Blanco Trail Junction. John Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Forest Kings Canyon National Park Big Pine, California. Eastern Sierra, Sierra Nevada. Trailhead: Tabosee Pass Trailhead, Big Pine August 2024 Itinerary: This video covers the first two days of a seven day backpacking trip from the Taboose Pass Trailhead which included the Taboose Pass, Cardinal Mountain, the Muro Blanco Trail, Cartridge Pass, Cartridge Creek, Marion Lake, Dumbbell Pass, Dumbbell Lakes, Cataract Creek Pass, Amphitheater Lake, Cataract Creek, PCT/JMT trail, Palisade Lakes, Mother Pass, Upper Basin, Bench Lake, Taboose Pass and exit to the Tabosee Pass Trailhead. The hike up to Cardinal Mountain was cross-country and steep but overall easy in regards to terrain and navigation. Day 1: Taboose Pass Trailhead to Taboose Pass. Camp at tarn near Taboose Pass. Day 2: Hike up to Cardinal Mountain from Tabosee Pass and return to camp. Taboose Pass trail from Taboose Pass to JMT/PCT junction and to the Muro Blanco Trail Junction. Trip Section Stats: 15 mi, approx 8,000 ft elevation gain. AllTrails Map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/rec... Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stopped recording only once camp was setup for each day. Hike Notes: The first leg of this fantastic seven day backpacking trip in the Easter Sierra entailed the ascent to Taboose Pass from the Owen Valley on the first day followed by the hike up to Cardinal Mountain in the morning on the second day. The hike to the pass from the trailhead, although gradual and spread in about 8 miles, implies 6,300 of elevation gain. I did not reach the summit of Cardinal Mountain as I wanted to get as close as possible to Cartridge Pass on the second day so I had to cut it short. I made it up to the ridge from which the 360 view was spectacular and from which I could see a good number of the landmarks I would hike to during the trip. The camping site of the first night at the tarns right below Taboose Pass was also spectacular, with beautiful golden hour views both at dusk and at dawn. The road to the Taboose Pass Trailhead is pretty rough and should be attempted with a vehicle with some clearance - four wheel drive is not strictly necessary if the weather is dry. Also, Taboose Pass is among the hardest passes to reach in the Eastern Sierra which means not much traffic at the Trailhead and on the trail. Quite a contrast to the Kearsarge Pass trail I hiked a week earlier. A beautiful night at the Pass and a beautiful hike up to Cardinal Mountain before descending to the PCT/JMT trail junction and heading to the Muro Blanco trail. A great start to my last seven day backpacking trip in the Sierra for the season.
