A child is introduced to cooked rice through this ritual called “Anna prashnam”. And rice continues to be a part of every ritual from marriage to death. This is not without a reason. Do you know that India and the entire South-east Asia has been the host to an incredible diversity of rices? Let me share some unbelievable numbers with you… How many varieties of rice do most of us eat? Perhaps 3 to 5 at best, am I right? And of course all of it is fully polished & white, so we hardly know the difference of one from another. But how many types of rice are there in India? How many varieties were grown say two centuries ago? You will be surprised to find the answers. The decline of this INCREDIBLE genetic diversity began during the British colonisation & PEAKED after the Green Revolution in 1960 At this time, Dr. RH Richharia, then Director of the Central Rice Research Institute, Odisha, undertook a journey from India’s west coast to its east coast to collect varieties of rice being grown across India. He himself collected about 22,500 varieties of rice. This was the biggest Indian collection and the 2nd biggest in the world! There are various NGO initiatives that have tried to conserved what little is left. A good example is Save Our Rice Campaign, initiated by a Kerala based NGO, Thanal. This initiative has conserved over 1,100 varieties of rice... 250 varieties in Wayanad in Kerala, over 700 varieties in Karnataka, over 140 varieties in Tamil Nadu. There are many more initiatives like this at work across India. I want you to contrast it with the number of varieties of rice that YOU eat.
