I am fortunate to be tasting today at a beautiful site by the sea in New Zealand's Northland. The wine I have to taste is a magnum of J. J. Prum's Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2016, a wine from a classic Mittelmosel site in an excellent vintage for the Mosel. Tasted from a magnum, the wine is still quite young and fresh. J. J. Prüm is easily one of Germany's top wine producers. The estate is based in the village of Wehlen on the banks of the River Mosel, In the MittelMosel and produces top-quality Rieslings that are noted for their balance and longevity. The Prüm family had been making wine in the Mosel for four hundred years, before Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm was formally established in 1911, by Johann Josef Prüm. The estate was taken over by his son Sebastian in 1921, the year that J.J. Prüm created its first sweet Auslese wine, Wines that defined the style J.J. Prum has become famous for The estate remains in the hands of the same family. In 1969 Sebastian was succeeded by his two sons, Manfred and Wolfgang Prüm. Today, the estate is primarily run by Manfred Prüm's daughter, Dr. Katharina Prüm, who has been at the estate since 2003 and assumed full responsibility for its management in 2007. Manfred still involved in the business. J. J. Prüm have 22 hectares of vineyards spread out over several Erste Lage vineyards in the Mittel Mosel. Principally the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, and also the neighbouring Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. They also have holdings in the Graacher Himmelreich and Bernkasteler Badstube.
