The Hobby chick has now embraced branching for the second time to the branch to the left of the nest! Yesterday, Lil Hobby branched to the right and had both feet off the rails and out of the nest. 🐥 In case you missed it, here is my video: Hobby Chick BRANCHES 1st Time! Look At Lil Hobby Go! Wingers & Cuteness 😊 8.7.24 🎥 • Dorset Hobby Cam ~ Hobby Chick BRANCHES 1s... What is considered branching? Branching is when both feet of the chick are off the rails & out of the nest. Branching is a critical development step on its path to independent flight. Prior to branching, we watched the hobby chick jumping, flapping its wings vigorously on the rails feeling the wind in its wings. Branching strengthens their flight muscles & improves their agility and landing skills which are very important. Lil Hobby went up and down the branch this morning three times - and came back down with a perfect dismount to the rails and nest. A gold medal performance for sure! 🏆 This was followed with a lot of winging and flapping all around increasing its pectoral strength for flight. Don't blink - these hobbies are fast! The adult male is the same male (he is ringed) but we think the female is a new bird as she doesn’t have the aberrant white feather on her head which has been present in previous years. We still don’t have a full ring number for the male but are fairly certain he was ringed as a chick by us in 2019 approx. 10km away. " Thank you for watching!
