SOUNDBITE (Indonesian) Elza Syarief, Defense Lawyer "In the journalistic code of ethics, it is clearly stated that when referring to someone who is suspected to commit a crime, that person has to be written or mentioned as a suspected criminal and not passing a prior judgment. This is important to avoid trial by the press." 17. Suharto standing up shaking hands and preparing to leave court STORYLINE: The youngest son of Indonesia's former-dictator Suharto arrived at a Jakarta court on Wednesday to face murder charges and accusations that he paid hit men to kill a Supreme Court judge. Hutomo Mandala Putra, known as Tommy, is accused of ordering the assassination of Judge Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, who had earlier sentenced him to 18 months in prison over a multimillion-dollar real estate scam. The 39-year-old millionaire arrived in handcuffs at the Central Jakarta District Court under heavy security. Before the hearing, his lawyers said the charges were baseless and that he was innocent, although they feared he might not get a fair trial. Suhato listened as state prosecutor Ahmad Mardani read the charges filed against him which included the illegal possession of weapons and fleeing from justice. In a statement to the court, his lawyer Elza Syarief said Tommy Suhato was innocent of the charges. The trial is regarded as a test of Indonesia's legal system which has a reputation for being corrupt and sometimes inept.
