Van drives away STORYLINE: Prosecutors on Monday demanded a 15-year jail term for the youngest son of ex-dictator Suharto, surprising many who expected him to face a death sentence for allegedly ordering the assassination of a Supreme Court judge. Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra is accused of masterminding the murder of Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, a Supreme Court judge, who sentenced him to 18 months in prison in 2000 for a multimillion-dollar real estate scam. Madani explained that prosecutors had opted against recommending a harsher sentence because the defendant was young and had a family to support. They also said Tommy had been "polite" during the trial. Prosecutors argued that the evidence against Tommy was overwhelming, citing the testimony of witnesses, weapons found at Tommy's hide-outs, documents linking Tommy to the crime and bank statements showing that the former playboy transferred tens of thousands of dollars to the killers. Tommy, who turned 40 on Monday, has denied any wrongdoing. If found guilty, he could theoretically receive the death penalty despite the prosecutors' more lenient demand. The court is scheduled to decide later this month whether to convict him. Kartasasmita was murdered in July 2001 by two gunmen on motorbikes, who were later arrested and claimed Tommy had paid them to kill the judge. The assassination occurred when Tommy was a fugitive. He went missing for a year after his graft verdict was announced and was captured in November 2001 after a high-profile manhunt. His current trial started on March 19.
