Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra was taken from police headquarters where he's already spent months in a cell and escorted to the prison by hundreds of policemen carrying automatic rifles. Tommy smiled and waved to dozens of reporters crowding the gate, telling them he will abide by "Indonesia's rule of law." The move to Cipinang, where hundreds of political prisoners were jailed during his father's 32-year reign, is another step in Tommy's protracted legal process. It could also defuse criticism of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's administration for its alleged failure to deal harshly with high-profile prisoners connected to Suharto. Deputy Head of Jakarta prosecutor's office Antasari Azhar told journalists Tommy was being charged for "murder and the illegal possession of firearms." Tommy is accused of ordering the murder of a Supreme Court judge who sentenced him to 18 months in jail for a 1997 multimillion dollar real estate scam. He fled from justice when an arrest warrant was issued and was recaptured last November.
