In 1982 the Chambersburg Mall opened with two anchors (Hess's and Gee Bee) and 64 inline stores. In 1985 The Bon-Ton opened as the malls third anchor, and in 1991 Sears opened as the fourth. Around this time Hess's closed and was replaced by JCPenney. In 1992 Gee Bee was replaced by Value City, which in 2008 was replaced by Burlington. In 2014 Sears closed, followed by JCPenney in 2015. Then in 2018 The Bon-Ton would file for bankruptcy which would bring about the end of this location in August of that year. Burlington would leave only five months later. The mall which had been called a "a perennial underperformer" by U.S. News & World Report would only be left with an Antique shop, a T-Mobile store, a Bath and Body Works, and an AMC Theatre. While there have been talks about redeveloping the site, no real plans have materialized, leaving the future of the Chambersburg Mall uncertain.
