Fire hydrant exercise is part of a stage 1 protocol of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. (PFPS) It is also a fantastic hip exercise that can also be used in the rehab of piriformis syndrome. The exercise is performed on all 4's. You draw in or brace your abdominals, Lift your leg out to the side and hold for 2 seconds. This exercise is great for core stability and hip strength. It has an insidious onset (gradual over time with no real incident to cause it) and can become debilitating. It normally shows itself with knee pain when squatting, knee pain after running, knee pain whilst running, knee pain when bending and knee pain after squats.
