Bush: "I told the president that I'm fully committed to helping the Iraqi government achieve important objectives. We call them benchmarks. Political law - that's necessary to show the Iraqi citizens that there is a unified government willing to work for the interests of all people. The president fully understands the need for the Iraqi government to meet certain benchmarks and he is dedicated to achieving those benchmarks." 4. Cutaway media, pan back to Bush and Talabani 5. SOUNDBITE (English) US President George W. Bush: "That it's in our interests to help the Iraqis defeat Al-Qaida. We must not let Al-Qaida have a safe haven in Iraq. We must not retreat in the face of the unspeakable violence that they perpetuate on your citizens. We must help you prevail and if all Iraqi's show the same courage you showed we will prevail. And there's a lot of courageous Iraqis there. I'm confident we can succeed Mr President and I want to thank you for coming here to the White House to join me." 6. Cutaway media 7. Bush pledged his support for the Iraqi government during a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani at the White House on Thursday. The Iraqi President is on an extended trip to the United States, which has included a stop for medical treatment. Bush said he was committed to helping the Iraqi government reach important political objectives and to defeating Al-Qaida. "We must not let Al-Qaida have a safe haven in Iraq. We must not retreat in the face of the unspeakable violence that they perpetuate on your citizens," he told Talabani. "We must help you prevail and if all Iraqi's show the same courage you showed we will prevail. And there's a lot of courageous Iraqis there. I'm confident we can succeed Mr President." Talabani said he was determined to achieve progress, but conceded there had been problems. "We are going forward with difficulties, I don't deny difficulties," he said. "Still we are suffering from some problems, but we are determined to (reach) benchmarks and we are determined to go forward." Bush, spoke by secure video conference on Wednesday with the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the country's two vice presidents, Tariq al-Hashimi and Adel Abdul-Mahdi. In the 40-minute call, the leaders talked about ways to combat violence and making progress toward political and economic reconciliation, White House press secretary Tony Snow said. Talabani left Iraq on Sunday for his visit of almost three weeks in the United States. He arrived on Sunday night in Rochester, Minnesota, where he left a car surrounded by several security guards and entered the Mayo Clinic, a local television broadcast showed.
