SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Jalal Talabani, Iraqi President (translated immediately afterwards into French): "We spoke about the positive and negative aspects of the progress made in diverse domains of Iraq, and the problems we are still suffering. We've asked President Chirac to continue to support the Iraqi people in all areas. We've also expressed our desire to improve and deepen our relationship with France in all areas. And the response from the President of the Republic was positive. Thank you." 17. Mid of Talabani convoy leaving STORYLINE: Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on Thursday his country could send U.S. led troops home in two to three years, once Iraq has set up its own domestic security forces. Talabani made the comments during his six-day visit to France that included talks on Thursday with President Jacques Chirac at Paris' Elysee Palace. France has strongly opposed the U.S. led invasion of Iraq but President Talabani was keen to push for closer ties between Iraq and France. "We've asked President Chirac to continue to support the Iraqi people in all areas. We've also expressed our desire to improve and deepen our relationship with France in all areas. And the response from the President of the Republic was positive," said President Talabani following his talks with the French president. Amid continued shootings, bombings and abductions in Iraq three years after the U.S. led invasion, many in the United States and across the international community have questioned how much longer coalition forces should stay. In September, Talabani told the United Nations that coalition forces should remain in Iraq until Iraqi security forces were "capable of putting an end to terrorism and maintaining stability and security." France is not calling for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, but French diplomats have said that announcing a schedule for a gradual pullout would help soothe tensions in Iraq.
