Located in the Leme neighborhood on a hillside between Copacabana Beach and Botafogo, Babilônia is a picturesque favela with breathtaking views of Rio's famous coastline. In this video, I'll take you on a journey through its colorful streets. We'll see street art, murals, and local businesses. I'll talk a bit about the history, culture, and safety in Babilonia. I spent two weeks staying in an Airbnb in Babilonia. It was about a 15 minute walk from the beach. It was also a much more affordable place to stay than nearby Copacabana or Leme. I felt reasonably safe walking through the area, even at night. I enjoyed my stay. The history of Babilônia favela in Rio de Janeiro dates back to the 18th century. The Portuguese built a fortress atop the hill to guard Guanabara Bay's entrance. The favela was established in the late 19th century when soldiers created an observation post in Leme and built shacks for their stay. They were later joined by construction workers building tunnels, tramways, and apartment complexes in Copacabana and Leme. During World War II, the Brazilian Army constructed casemates on the hill to protect the city. The favela's name has two possible origins: either from the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or from a beer called Babilônia sold at a nearby tramway station. For years, drug traffickers controlled Babilônia, imposing strict rules on the community. In June 2009, police occupied the area peacefully with Police Pacification Units. Their aim was to transform Babilônia into a model community. They were successful. Babilônia gained popularity among tourists, leading to gentrification. These days, hiking to the top of Morro de Babilonia is a popular activity for tourists. From the hilltop, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Flamengo, Copacabana, and a unique perspective of Sugarloaf. Unfortunately, conditions have declined somewhat over time. Recently, a rival gang from a neighboring favela attempted to seize control of Babilônia's drug trade. The area is still safe for tourists to visit.
