The cycle is inspired by the Rachmaninoff preludes he performed and by his anti-war novel Russian Cut. [Verse 1] The steppe grows quiet. Night spreads wide. Still the air is full of sounds. Broken noises far apart tell the same story of war. [Verse 2] Low clouds run across the sky. Grey and torn. Wind pushes them. Pale flashes blink through like cold autumn light. [Chorus] A slow thunder moves above. Sometimes louder. Sometimes fading. The old order breaks apart somewhere in the dark. [Verse 3] Here in the fire. Under bullets. A man saves himself. A map on the table. Lines of the front bend slowly under his hand in silence. [Verse 4] Engines growl. Horses cry. Distant blasts answer back. The world moves like heavy guns turning in the night.
