I love national and provincial campgrounds. I love federal and state campgrounds. That doesn’t mean I don’t have a few gripes with them. Stealth camping with a big Goldwing and a Mini Mate tent trailer is not that simple. I did that when I was much younger, i.e. still in my 50s but I usually like a nice campsite. One of the biggest problems with camping is the reservation system. I think that the software is created and maintained by companies outside of the park system and they charge a transaction fee on every reservation. Fair enough as most all parks are underfunded and the government parks probably could not keep such software up and running. I think the fees are a little high and there is even a fee on cancelling a reservation. Far too many people will book a week of camping just to get the weekend they want, then either cancel the weekdays close to the date or don’t bother to cancel at all because of the cancellation fee and reduced refund. This means that there are often many empty campsites in a campground that is “sold-out”. Another issue is that everything has to be done online and yet cell coverage in many of the areas the parks are in is poor or non-existent. That’s what happened to me outside Glacier National Park at Lid Creek NFS campground. I could not make my reservation online. When I got to the campground, I took a campsite that I was sure was marked on the map as a First Come, First Served campsite. The hostess that I was fine but the next morning when she went to enter my credit card to pay for two nights, she discovered that the site was now booked for ten days. I could have just moved to another site but with the tent trailer that means totally packing up before moving. If I was doing a total pack up and then total setup, I would lose the time I needed to go to the Road to the Sun. In the end I decided if I was going to pack up I was going to move one. So I only paid for my one night and then hit the road. The road to East Glacier was still a really nice ride. In East Glacier, I stopped at the Two Medicine Grill and had a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of potato bacon soup. Excellent. At this point I should have turned north and I’m not sure why I didn’t. Ended up going east for quite a while before going north. It may have to do with the actual border crossing points. For the first time I was “selected” for a secondary random interview by the young lady at the agent kiosk. Pulling over I was greeted by another young woman who first wondered if I could pull into the garage there and I told her I could only really do that if it was a pull through and it wasn’t so we had a pleasant chat in the sun. I just need to open my saddlebags and not open up the tent trailer which was great. I only had a few beer to declare. She was interested in the camper and the fact I was riding as far as I was. I may have gotten a new subscriber. Speaking of subscribers, as I started to edit this I hit 10,000 subscribers. A humbling landmark for sure. My last little hiccup to the days was booking a campsite at Old Man Dam near Pritcher Creek instead of Old Man River Campgrond near Fort McLeod. I think I’ll stay here two nights. I have laundry to do anyway. Buy Me a Coffee Campaign (or lunch or a tank of gas for the summer of ’25) https://www.buymeacoffee.com/OldGuyon...
