Let me tell you why it is important to control anger as Christians. Anger is a natural emotion. Everyone feels it. But if it is not controlled, it becomes sin. Mastering emotions begins with mastering anger. The apostle Paul wrote to Christians who were learning to live a new life in Christ. They had left their old ways. They were learning to walk in holiness. Paul did not say we should never be angry. He warned us not to allow anger to lead us into sin. From Ephesians 4:26 (ESV): “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,” This shows that anger must not control a child of God. Anger is allowed. Sin is not allowed. When anger controls you, you speak harsh words. You insult others. You break trust. You destroy relationships. You may even become violent. Keeping anger for many days gives room for more sin in the heart. It grows. It spreads. It becomes dangerous. As Christians, we should not shout in rage. We should not insult our spouses. We should not fight in public. We should not seek revenge. We should not keep silent anger while hatred grows inside. That is not Christ- like. Instead, we must speak calmly. We must listen before we talk. We must settle issues quickly. We must forgive before the day ends. We must pray before reacting. We must remember how Christ forgave us. Self-control is a sign of maturity. When we practice this, there is peace in the home. There is unity in the church. There is respect in the community. Our hearts remain clean before God. Our prayers are not hindered. When anger is controlled, emotions are controlled. When anger obeys Christ, the heart becomes strong. This is how we begin mastering emotions.
