Rabia Khatoon shares strategies and methods of teaching speaking skills to students studying English as a foreign language. Session Abstract For a large number of EFL learners, the English lesson is their only chance to practice English. After they leave the class, they have no opportunity to use the target language or communicate in an appropriate environment. Therefore, the teacher should dedicate sufficient time during the English lessons to teach and improve their speaking skills, and give as many opportunities as possible to speak and communicate in English. Speaking is the procedure of communicating meaning fully in a given context through the use of spoken and non-spoken symbols (Chaney, 1998, p. 13). Thus, it is considered to be a critical part of second language learning and teaching. Its significance requires special attention to be taught in order to give maximum opportunity to EFL learners to develop their understanding if meaning and usage of language in a context, because that’s the only way, students can communicate and learn to follow the social rules suitable in the provided communicative situation. In order to teach EFL language learners how to speak some speaking activities are discussed in this presentation that can be useful in ESL and EFL classroom settings. Hence, in this presentation, we will discuss some strategies to be employed by a teacher when teaching and developing speaking in his/her students.
