Nice to Chamonix volbiv day 2 (on my Advance Omega XAlps 3)

Tuesday 30th July 2019 dawned with a strong NE'ly breeze, but the forecast was for light NW'lies later, so after I'd met up with Mincek, Richard and Steve at the shepherd's hut for breakfast and coffee (Tom the shepherd was such a nice guy, he left a note saying help yourselves to bread and cheese!!), we hiked about 40 minutes to the hill to the south of the village of Entraigues which we thought would give us a good glide across to the sunny slopes to our north. I took off first at 1412 and all was going well with me, Richard and Mincek climbing nicely, waiting for Steve to catch us up (he took off quite a bit after us), when Mincek came over the radio saying that he'd seen Steve go into the trees low down! Unfortunately Steve had lost the aerial for his radio the day before so we had no easy way to contact him to find out whether he was ok. The three of us then spent the next 15 minutes flying over the area before I spotted him, then I spent another 15 minutes spiralling down to get low enough to shout "Are you ok?" and "Do you need help?" AND to hear his replies - "Yes" and "No"! With confirmation that he was ok and didn't need our help (it would have been difficult to land close to him as the lift was pretty strong by now) we climbed again to carry on our flights northward, but by now it was 1540 so our plans of getting up to Albertville were looking a bit optimistic...!
