It is something that we as clinicians use to deliver the message of ACT to clients in a friendly and comfortable way. There is a particular metaphor I would like to share with you today which is about the workability of looking at our thoughts. Looking at our thoughts metaphor Pretend that something has occurred at home such as a break, a leak, or damage to a water pipe in the kitchen. You call in one technician or you may even call a few to compare prices and services. Three quotes come back for the repairs needed. You take those three quotes, look through them and decide which one is most useful for you. We don't always go for the cheapest quote because it may not provide the service we are looking for. We might not go for the most expensive one either because it might be too expensive for the service that is being provided. Maybe the middle price might be most useful at the time -- but then again, it may not be. What we are looking to do is to take all the quotes and decide what we are going to do based on the workability of my needs. If my need is for a very cheap repair then I may go for the first, and lowest, price. However, if I'm looking for quality then I will look at who is going to provide the best quality and this may not necessarily be based on price alone. Workability is about exploring each of the costs and we might even ask for a forth or a fifth quote. This metaphor is important and usable in the sense that I could ask my client to take a 'quote' of their thoughts. When we take a quote of thoughts, we look at thoughts to see which ones are workable and which ones aren't based on what's important to us and our values.
