TRANSCRIPT Good morning! Happy Monday! Today, I would like to talk about watching movies for language learning. It is a fun activity and it can greatly enhance your language learning journey. The question is, how should you watch it, and if you should use subtitles while you are doing it? Some teachers suggest watching movies without subtitles as in real-life conversations people don’t have subtitles written on their chests while they are speaking English, and it makes sense. But on the other hand, using English subtitles for learning English with English-speaking movies can be a wonderful learning tool, you just have to use it right. First of all, there is not much sense in watching a movie in English and following subtitles in your mother tongue, your brain just concentrates on the subtitles and you won’t get much learning out of it. Another option is to watch English movies with English subtitles, you reinforce your vocabulary and improve your reading skills. By reading the dialogue as you listen to it, you develop your listening skills and train your ears to recognize words and phrases in context. This combination of visual and auditory input strengthens your language acquisition and helps you become more attuned to the nuances of pronunciation and intonation. But the best option, in my opinion, is to pick a movie that you love so much that you have watched translated many times, and you know the story and almost every phrase. Your challenge is to watch this movie first without any subtitles to see if you can understand and follow the story, and then watch them with English subtitles and pause from time to time and write down any words, expressions, or idioms that you liked from the movie. This way, you reinforce the vocabulary you can learn from that particular movie. So, grab a bowl of popcorn, press play, and enjoy the immersive and enjoyable experience of learning a new language through movies!
