Leg numbness or sort of altered sensation feeling in the leg after sitting for a long rime is a very common condition, can happen at any age group, more so in the older age group. This happens sometimes because of compression of the sciatic nerve when you are sitting near the gluteal area. What is sciatic nerve? It is a bundle of nerves which starts from your lower back, which is connected to the spinal cord. So this can get compressed in the area where you are sitting and can lead to numbness. Now how do you manage this? It is a very simple thing. There are no treatments as such to be done. You just have to just stand up or change your position repeatedly when you are going to sit for a long time , please change your positions repeatedly or get up, stand, walk for few minutes or few seconds , it will get relieved by itself. Very rarely these sorts of pain can become a little bit more prolonged, that is, it can go on for a longer duration. During such times there are medications that can be given. Very rare occasions the nerve has to be decompressed at the gluteal area or in the spinal cord. So this is the situation we call it as lumbar canal stenosis, where in the lumbar spine area, there is a lack of space and that leads to a compression of the nerves in different positions, more so in standing position rather than in a sitting position. But it can happen in a sitting position also. In such situations we may have to open the lumbar spine and decompress the nerve roots which are getting compressed. In general such pains are very common and it can be relieved by few moments of walking or standing and just relaxation. Changing of positions will give you a prolonged time to sit so that you don’t have to have such numbness while sitting for long duration.
