The Anthéor Viaduct on the French Riviera became one of the most stubborn targets Allied air forces tried to destroy during World War II. In 1943–1944, the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces launched multiple bombing raids against this strategic railway bridge carrying German supplies between southern France and northern Italy. Despite attacks by heavy bombers and precision missions by the legendary RAF No. 617 Squadron, the bridge survived raid after raid. This video tells the true story behind those missions and the death of Flight Lieutenant Robert Claude Hay, one of the RAF’s most skilled bomb aimers and a veteran of the famous Dambusters raid. During a dangerous night attack in February 1944, Hay was killed when anti-aircraft fire struck the Lancaster bomber he was flying in with Squadron Leader Mick Martin. The Anthéor Viaduct remained standing even after repeated precision bombing attempts. The failures at Anthéor forced Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire to develop a revolutionary new tactic using the fast de Havilland Mosquito to mark targets for heavy bombers. That breakthrough transformed RAF precision bombing and was later used against critical targets across Europe during the final stages of World War II. #ww2history #worldwar2 #raf #militaryhistory #aviationhistory #wwii #dambusters #lancasterbomber #MosquitoBomber #ww2aviation #LeonardCheshire #warhistory #militaryaviation #historydocumentary
