I am sharing tips and ideas for using a microwave with a visual impairment. I also demonstrate cooking in the microwave to show viewers how my personal tactile markers, tips, and hacks applied allow me to use the microwave independently. Although the conventional stovetop and oven are my preferred method of cooking choice, using the microwave with adaptations expands opportunities for cooking in and on additional appliances. To make your kitchen appliances and microwave / microwave oven suitable for visual impairments, you could use peel and stick microwave stickers, braille labels, bump dots, HALOS® (Home Appliance Labeling and Overlay System) tactile icon stickers, or purchase a talking microwave oven. Keep in mind, research has concluded there are only slight differences between microwave oven and conventional stove cooking on vitamin retention in foods. Additionally, there are no significant nutritional differences existing between foods prepared by conventional and microwave techniques, studies say. If considering the HALOS® Tactile Icon Microwave Stickers for yourself, two sets come per pack (2 stickers per function). These 9 individual self-adhesive stickers are raised and make it easier for those who are Blind or visually impaired to see or feel the buttons they commonly use on their microwave oven. There are stickers for start, cancel, defrost, cook time, and different cook time presets such as, stickers shaped like popcorn, a slice of pizza, and a baked potato. Every pack contains two of each sticker, so you can replace each label once if necessary. The HALOS System, also known as Home Appliance Labeling and Overlay System, have tactile self-adhesive raised icon stickers, shaped to identify the function of various buttons on your microwave, oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, dryer, virtually any appliance, as HALOS offers a variety of packs. These stickers are designed so Blind or visually impaired individuals can operate their appliances by feeling the most regularly used buttons. It is a system of raised shapes that represent different appliance controls such as start and stop. These tactile icon stickers adhere to your touch surface appliances so you can identify the location and function of the buttons by touch. For example, the Start icon is a Triangle Shape, Stop/Cancel is an X shape, Defrost is a Water Droplet shape, and Power Level is a Stair Step shape, just to mention a few. Today’s overwhelming selection of sleek microwaves/microwave ovens require the use of braille or other tactile markings to be somewhat useful for vision impairments, but even with these modifications, cooking blind or blind cooking and using the more advanced cooking features, still remain inaccessible without opting for a pricey talking microwave oven. While low levels of radiation are generally considered safe, prolonged exposure to microwaves could potentially cause skin burns or cataracts, according to the Food and Drug Administration (.gov). While microwaves remain a common appliance, some individuals are choosing to get rid of them due to concerns about radiation exposure, nutrient loss, uneven heating, and bacteria survival. Others prefer the flavor and cooking qualities of traditional methods like stovetop cooking, oven cooking, or roasting. Hi there, I’m Anita. Welcome to my Lifestyle Channel on YouTube.
