It's Christmas Day 2004, and in her traditional Christmas address to the Commonwealth, the late Queen Elizabeth II call for tolerance within the UK's diverse society. And that was one of the main news on the BBC's early evening news, anchored by Darren Jordan (now at Al Jezerra.) Other stories covered during this recording including a look ahead to the Ukrainian elections held the following day, the launch of Mahmoud Abbas' bid to succeed the late Yasser Arafat (who died the previous month) as Palestinian president (he eventually did so the following year), the investigation of 93-years old Margaret Weir's murder in Glasgow, the successful launch of the European Space Agency probe Huygens and a white Christmas in parts of the UK. At the time, we never really thought that the following day's news will be dominated by a single tragic event over in South Asia. Then after Darren Bett tells us if our plan for Boxing Day will be going ahead or not, we have a trailer for EastEnders (That night's hour-long episode sees both Vicky Fowler and Sharon Watts saying “goodbye” to Albert Square – Sharon will return to the Square a couple of months later.), follow by a trailer for BBC Sport's coverage of the FA Cup 3rd Round featuring Catherine Tate and Dennis Wise. Then the announcer (probably the legend that is Duncan Newmarch, but correct me if I'm wrong) informing us that the UK free-to-air premiére of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (you know, the first one) is right after The Big Impression Christmas Special. Here's how those aforementioned programmes fits in the Christmas Day schedule on BBC1 in 2004: 06.00 Breakfast 09.00 CBBC: The Tail of Jack Frost 09.30 CBBC: What's New Scooby-Doo? 09.50 Crackers for Christmas (Live from Coventry) 10.50 Film: Disney's Aladdin and the King of Thieves (Trailer: • Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996) Tra... ) 12.05 Film: Santa Claus The Movie (Trailer: • Santa Claus (1985) Trailer #1 | Movieclips... ) 13.05 BBC News; Weather 14.00 Top of the Pops Christmas Special 15.00 The Queen's Christmas Message (Full speech: • The Queen's Christmas Message 2004 ) 15.10 Dear Father Christmas 15.55 Disney's 102 Dalmations (Tralier: • 102 Dalmatians Official Trailer (2000) ) 17.30 BBC News; Weather 17.35 The Big Impression Christmas Special 18.05 Film Premiére: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Trailer: • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (200... ) 20.25 EastEnders 21.25 The Vicar of Dibley 22.20 BBC News; Weather (extended due to breaking news coming out of South Asia) 22.35 Absolutely Fabulous Christmas Special 23.10 Before They Were Famous VIII 23.50 Film: Out of Sight (Trailer: • Out of Sight Official Trailer #1 - Ving Rh... ) 01.45 On Christmas Night 01.55 Film: Young Frankenstein (Trailer: • YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN trailer ) 03.40 Christmas Eve with Jonathan Ross (repeat) 04.40 Joins BBC News 24 Source: Radio Times/BBC Online via BBC Archives (genome.ch.bbc.co.uk)
