Twentieth Century Nicoville brings you the music from the golden age of the waltz, the golden age of the operetta, and the golden age of Hollywood. In the dawn of the 20th Century, the world was still in the mindset, decorum, and romanticisim of the Victorian age, particularly too in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and what way to display such oldies but goodies through a fashionable operetta about a rich widow, and her countrymen's attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband. Thus was born "The Merry Widow" or in its original German language "Die Lustig Witwe" composed by the famous Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár with the libretto written by Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, all the while based on the 1861 play L'attaché d'ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. Having grown-up around the military band, Franz implements several styles of music within the multicultural empire as well as the popular marches, gallops, and waltzes to set the story of Hanna Glawari, who has inherited twenty million francs from her late husband. The embassy in Paris of the poverty-stricken Balkan principality of Pontevedro is holding a ball to celebrate the birthday of the sovereign, the Grand Duke, and she is to be a guest at the ball – and the Pontevedrin ambassador, Baron Zeta, is scheming to ensure that she will keep her fortune in the country, saving Pontevedro from bankruptcy. The Baron intends that Count Danilo Danilovitsch, the first secretary of the embassy, should marry the widow. Danilo once had a courtship that broke off and through the crazy shinannigans of the operetta, they fall in love once again and marry. As with many an operetta, all ends happily. Today, the operetta had achieved international acclaim, with revivals, adaptations, and albums galore turning Franz Lehár into a household name. His most famous songs from the operetta include "Vilja Song", "Da geh' ich zu Maxim" ("You'll Find Me at Maxim's"), and the "Merry Widow Waltz", the subject of this AMV. In this AMV, Ais Wallenstein, a young widow, attends a banquet (I don't know where, but its a banquet) where he meets a young gentleman, an officer perhaps, named Bell Cranel, urged on to stay at her sister's side; But with a chance encounter, and some persuasion, he asks the widow for a dance. This AMV romps through the waltz and dance the night away, in hopes of true love. Without further ado, here is the Cartoon Company's production of "The Merry Widow" featuring the songs, "Lippen Schweigen - The Merry Widow Waltz", "Ja das studium der weiber ist schwer" and "Ja, wir sind es, die Grisetten".
