We met local artists, who are the torchbearers of this centuries-old tradition, and talked to them about the history, symbolism, and struggles behind this beautiful art. From natural dyes to mythological storytelling, every stroke of Madhubani painting carries a piece of Bihar’s identity. Our journey continued to Mithila Chitrakala Sansthaan, a dream project envisioned by CM Nitish Kumar to institutionalize and preserve Mithila art among the youth. There, we met students and teachers who are keeping this tradition alive, blending discipline, spirituality, and creativity. They showed us how art can be both heritage and livelihood, and how despite global fame, the artists behind it still struggle for fair recognition and income. From walls of mud houses to international galleries and fashion runways, Madhubani paintings have travelled far yet their roots remain in Bihar’s soil.
