This prelude uses the subject from the 22nd Fugue in Volume Two of the Well-Tempered Clavier as the basis for inspiration. The work opens with a fairly chordal statement of the melody before moving into a section of greater motion in the right hand. This is followed by added movement in the left hand, so it is important to keep the melody in the forefront of all the activity surrounding it... not always an easy thing to do. There is a deep sense of grief and loss which pervades the entire prelude made even more so by the rumbling low notes in the left hand. It is the passing of someone who cannot be replaced, yet the world keeps turning and must go despite the chasm left by their departure. The piece ends with a return of the chordal material from the opening, but this time it fades away to nothing as the last tear falls. https://www.terrenceniska.com / terrence-niska-111079737440894 Terrence Niska - Composer Michael Swedberg - Pianist Michael Swedberg - Video Editor
