This book is unlike anything I've ever read before, and it is a classic for a reason. The world-building is the best you will ever come across in fantasy, the characters are compelling, interesting, and memorable, the writing-style is breathtaking, the philosophy is deep and impactful, and the story is expertly crafted. Don't be surprised if this book and series ruins other fantasy series for you, it is that good. I now understand why this is the gold standard in this genre. Would I recommend starting this series as a beginner in fantasy? No. The pacing is quite slow in this first book, and I wouldn't say it's the easiest book to read. But, when you're ready, I think you will be blown away when you finally end up reading it. Good luck, and let me know what you think. I can't wait to continue with The Two Towers!
