Proclaiming that "he stood head and shoulders above the rest" of the candidates, the Cleveland Browns officially introduced Todd Monken as the 19th head coach in team history at a a press conference Tuesday at the team's Berea headquarters. "Wow! Man, am I excited to lead this flagship NFL franchise. It's been a long time coming. It really has been a long journey. I'm jacked. I'm excited to be with the Cleveland Browns," the 59-year-old Monken said at the start of his remarks. After a lengthy search, the Browns announced the hiring of the former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator on Jan. 28. The other finalists were Cleveland's defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. The 59-year-old Monken arrived in Berea two days later. "There's something that I've always lived by as a position coach and coordinator and will as a head coach. (Browns co-owners) Dee and Jimmy (Haslam) cut a check with my name on it. You know what they expect? A freaking kick ass football team. They want to become a winning franchise that our fan base in our region is proud of. That's all they've been about. It's how you build a winning franchise that consistently competes for championships. You know what? My job is to prove it every single day," Monken added. Monken replaces two-time NFL Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski, who was let go of his duties as Browns head coach on Jan. 5 after posting a 46-58 record with two playoff appearances. An 8-26 mark over the past two seasons ultimately did in Stefanski in Cleveland, and he was hired as the Atlanta Falcons' new head coach on Jan. 17.
