The 41-year-old fitness professional won the CrossFit games in his age division in 2014 and 2015. His chances to defend his title were looking good until a friendly soccer game with his kids led to a disastrous injury last Thanksgiving. [Shawn Ramirez, Fitness Professional] Two fractures to my tibia, a spiral fracture to my fibula and about three ligaments as well. So it was a tough fall. [Charles Jordan, M.D., Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon] He had a very complex fracture that involved a region of the ankle called the syndesmosis. It's particularly challenging for him because by the nature of what he does as an athlete, it really affects everything he does. [X-ray of Shawn’s foot] [Shawn Ramirez] Immediately I said, "I got to get in the right hands. I got to get with some sports orthopedics, somebody that knows my lifestyle, knows my goals." [Front of Baptist Health building] [Charles Jordan, M.D.] Shawn, like a lot of very high-level athletes really visited a lot of different doctors and went to a lot of different places and got opinions from some colleagues of mine that are world renowned. [Shawn Ramirez] They said, "2016 is over. You might as well just hang up your shoes. You won't be ready." So I got in front of Dr. Jordan and he had so many different ideas as to what procedures were possible, which nobody else even thought of. [Shawn Ramirez working out] [Charles Jordan, M.D.] We have all the resources that any other state-of-the-art hospital or a renowned medical center has to be able to take care of patients who have complex injuries. [Shawn Ramirez] So the results from the surgery were astonishing. It was just absolutely amazing. And what that has done for me today has kept me in the hunt and in the race for my three-peat. And I would have never imagined from the original prognosis's that I got in early on that this would even be possible. [Charles Jordan, M.D.] It sounds corny, but I really love to see people get better. So I was really proud to see how well he's been doing and the fact that we were able to get them back to a championship caliber. [Photo of Shawn, his wife, and Dr. Charles Jordan] [Shawn Ramirez] All the staff at West Kendall Baptist, all the way from check-in to surgery, I've never felt more support. So the Miami Orthopedic Sports medicine Institute, it's not just for those high-end profiles of athletes, but it really is for everybody. And you get treated as that athlete and you're getting the care that the best out there get, which is really very hard to find out there. [Baptist Health South Florida] [End Transcript]
