An unpublished live broadcast recording of October 17, 1943 in which Arthur Loesser plays the Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 in D Minor with the Cleveland Orchestra under conductor Erich Leinsdorf. This is the only recording I've come across of Loesser in a concerto and also this early in his career. Captain Loesser (as he is called) was leaving imminently to join the fight in the war - it has been said he left directly after the concert, but he certainly left within the week. Known for his brilliant book Men, Women, & Pianos as well as recordings of obscure works in some 1960s recitals, Loesser's playing has generally not been heard in big-scale fiery works, so this performance may come as a bit of a surprise. He certainly pulls out all the stops, with incredibly powerful octaves and high-octane intensity, all with beautiful tone and sensitivity in lyrical sections. A fascinating recording by a remarkable pianist and scholar - 'the evil of two Loessers' as he called himself in reference to his more famous songwriter brother Frank Loesser! 0:00 broadcast announcement 2:15 1st movement 21:27 2nd movement 33:43 3rd movement Sincerest thanks go to Nicholas Brown for having provided this recording for this upload, and many thanks to Brian Andrew Leahy for tracking down the date of the concert!
