Meet the Slash Pine! Pinus elliottii 🌿

TERMINOLOGY TUESDAY 🌿 w/ the Florida Native Plant Society! Meet the Slash Pine! Slash Pine Pinus elliottii Family: Pinaceae Slash Pine is a medium to large species that grows 60-100 feet tall. It occurs across Florida and the Southeastern Coastal Plain in wet flatwoods and other areas with poorly drained, sandy soils. However, it is tolerant of drier soils and has been extensively planted in many habitats across the Southeast as a resource for lumber and turpentine. Pinus elliottii does occur down into peninsular Florida, but another entity that has historically been lumped into P. elliottii is more common in the peninsula. This entity is now recognized as a distinct species: Pinus densa, South Florida Slash Pine. 🌿Characteristic Features BARK: The mature bark has broad, flat, scaly plates that flake off to reveal patches of orange-brown color. The younger bark is darker, greyish-brown, furrowed, and rough. This bark is quite similar to Longleaf Pine, though the bark plates are typically larger than Longleaf. NEEDLES: 2, occasionally three needles per fascicle (bundle), medium length - 7-12 inches long. They are yellow-green, straight, and typically held erect and appressed to the stems. The twigs are thick and rough, with spreading scales. The terminal buds are tan-brown, as opposed to the silver-white color of Longleaf buds. FEMALE CONES: a distinctive russet-brown color sets apart their cones from the grayish cones of Loblolly. They are medium size, 3-7 inches long, and have an ovoid shape when open with dull, reflexed spines - not painful to squeeze like Loblolly is. The cones have a handsome russet color when they drop because they fall within a year of dispersing their seed—so they appear much fresher than Loblolly and other species that retain their cones on their branches for many years.
