This video captures the entire descent from over 14,000 feet above sea level, filmed from the front window for a true driver’s-eye perspective. 🏔️ About the Line The Pikes Peak Cog Railway runs from the town of Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. It is the highest cog railway in the world, and one of the few that is operated with diesel power. The line uses a rack-and-pinion system that allows trains to climb and descend grades far too steep for regular railways. ☀️ At the Summit At this altitude, the air is thin and the sunlight is incredibly harsh, something that is very apparent in the beginning of this video! Even on cool days, the UV exposure can be intense, and many visitors quickly notice how different it feels to breathe at 14,000 feet. The summit station keeps EMTs on standby, since altitude sickness is common and can become serious without warning. 🚆 About This Trip This video follows the entire downhill run from the summit back toward Manitou Springs. The train carefully descends through alpine tundra and rocky slopes before returning to dense pine forests and aspen trees at the height of fall foliage season, several thousand feet below.
