Operating over part of the historic Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, the Royal Gorge Route Railway takes passengers through one of Colorado’s most spectacular landscapes, the Royal Gorge. Often called the “Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River,” this dramatic, deep, and narrow canyon squeezes down to just 30 feet across at its narrowest point. This is a truly unbelievable bit of scenery! In the late 1800s, this line served as a vital route across the Rockies, carrying up to four transcontinental passenger trains each day. As competition from cars, buses, and airplanes increased, passenger service declined and finally ended in 1967. Freight trains continued through the gorge until 1989, but after a series of corporate changes, the Tennessee Pass line, including this section, was closed in 1997. Passenger trains returned in 1998 under the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Today, in coordination with some local freight operations, the line operates this 12-mile (19 km) section as a heritage railway and welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year.
