This is a rare, almost never-before played (or heard) cassette tape recording from the apartment home of someone named Andy in Detroit, Michigan. Ex-Detroit band members Rusty Day (vocals) and Bill Hodgson (guitar, slide, & vocals) are heard playing and jamming in an acoustic setting on Christmas Day 1981. In this session, Rusty and Bill jam on a collection of blues and gospel songs, including "Spoonful," Robert Johnson's "The Last Fair Deal Going Down," the traditional "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down," an instrumental that sounds strikingly similar to "Away in a Manger," Levon Helm’s “Feelin’ Good,” a new original of Rusty's called "Driving Life's Road" (which has a real Lowell George vibe to it here, thanks to Bill's acoustic slide playing), a possible original song of Bill’s (“Can’t Get You Off My Mind,” could be a possible title for that one), and a few other songs that may very well have been made up by Rusty and Bill on the spot. This is the first time in history that an instance of Rusty playing unplugged has ever surfaced, and thus shows a side of him that may be yet unknown to many a Cactus fan! Sadly, this was recorded on Rusty's last Christmas. He was tragically, brutally, and viciously murdered in his own home on the morning of Thursday, June 3rd 1982, along with his son and a guest. Some of Rusty's lyrics and phrases in the last two particular songs being played in this recording have an eerie, uncanny vibe to them when you consider what was to happen to him roughly half a year later. He didn’t know, of course, but still. Special thanks to my buddy, Monte "Mondo" Thomas, for granting me permission to post this one.
