My book The Green-Wood Carver: Slow Woodcraft For Beginners is out in most book stores now! My website: https://samuelalexandershapes.com Hello everyone, I hope you're all well. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Calm Carving! Today, I made a wonderful cooking spatula from a tough but clean Norway Maple log! It felt great to jump in to a minimal hand tool kit for this project and hi-light some of my favourite tools at the moment. I am really enjoying using the Thorn Wood Forge - Merlin axe - its wonderfully balanced with a nice, weighty head and as a hand tool should, made easy work from this green, fresh, but interlocked maple. The maple log was felled from a historic castle grounds and was lightly spalted. The inner, heartwood material was quite brittle and rotting and I suspect that this is why it was felled. None the less, it was a joy to carve. The paleness of sycamore can really illuminate a hand tool finish so it was compulsory for this project to carve slowly, make long, clean shavings and enjoy the precess and sharpen my hand tools along the way! The slöjd knife coped really well, making beautifully satisfying shavings that I really enjoyed! The way it sculpted the flow of the handle into the spatula head was like carving butter - I felt very lucky to spend this time to slow down and be present with my making. I have made a few spatulas in the past and today I wanted to tune into my muscle memory and get the correct ergonomic handles to head crank angles dialled. I got it first try and I can tell that this spatula is going to be a joy to use in the kitchen as well as a joy to have made! I like this overall shape of the bowl where the top is slimly rounded to aid the pushing of things in the pan or roasting dish as well as being thin enough to get underneath things like eggs, pancakes or burgers! It's approaching summer here and I must have bbq on my mind because all I could think about was how this thing would deal with a burger very well! I hope you are all well and as always, thank you for your support and kind words and feedback. If you have any questions about my carving practice or about the contents of this video, please don't hesitate to drop a comment and I will do my best to answer as soon as I can. If you wanted to support my journey, I do have some spoons and things for sale on my website and I also have a 'how to' book that can be purchased from most book stores! It is called The Green-Wood Carver: Slow Woodcraft For Beginners and it is a holistic guide to ignite your own carving journey so you can practice techniques like these at home. Take care friends!
